The Role
The CNC Miller is responsible for programming, setting, operating, and maintaining CNC milling machines to produce high-precision components. The role focuses on achieving strict quality standards while optimising machining strategies, tooling selection, and cycle times.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup & Operation
- Set up and operate CNC milling machines, including tooling, fixtures, work holding, probes, and offsets
- Prepare machines for production runs (program loading, tool verification, setup confirmation)
- Conduct first-off inspections and maintain consistent quality throughout production
CNC Programming
- Create, edit, and optimise CNC programs using CAM software (e.g. SolidCAM, Fusion 360) or G-code
- Adjust speeds, feeds, and toolpaths to maximise efficiency and accuracy
- Troubleshoot programming issues, including 5-axis machining
Tooling & Process Control
- Select appropriate tooling and machining strategies based on material and component requirements
- Monitor tool wear and maintain surface finish and dimensional accuracy
- Identify and implement process improvements and cycle time reductions
Quality Inspection
- Perform in-process and final inspections using precision measuring equipment
- Ensure compliance with engineering drawings, GD&T, and customer specifications
- Complete inspection documentation and maintain traceability
Troubleshooting & Maintenance
- Diagnose machining issues (e.g. chatter, tolerance deviation, tool failure)
- Carry out routine preventative maintenance
- Support continuous improvement and problem-solving activities
Production Efficiency
- Operate multiple machines where required to maintain workflow
- Support lights-out/unattended machining
- Maintain accurate production records and adhere to processes
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all health & safety procedures when operating machinery
- Ensure safe handling of tooling, fixtures, and components
- Comply with company and industry standards (ISO9001, AS9100, medical)
Qualifications & Experience
Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ CNC milling experience
- Experience with CAM programming and/or G-code editing
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T
- Experience machining stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, and alloys
Skills
- High attention to detail and strong manual dexterity
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Competent in precision measurement and quality control
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Understanding of lean manufacturing principles (desirable)
Working Conditions
- Full-time role in a modern machine shop environment
- Prolonged standing and handling of materials within safe limits
- Overtime and/or shift work may be required
